This book contains three short stories, plus a segment of an upcoming novel. The three stories deal with women of the south. The first two stories deal with the period before the civil war, while the last story seems to take place during the Depression. The book focuses on inner feelings, as opposed to historical facts and details. A wife takes her anger out on her husband's slave mistress. A slave, sister of the plantation owner's daughter, wakes up to her own beauty as she prepares her sister/owner for a dance. A woman, living alone with her mother in an isolated area, falls in love for the first time. Ms Craig does an excellent job putting the reader inside these women's hearts. An excellent, short read.

If you have never read anything by Gretchen Craig, The Color of the Rose is a good introduction. It is a collection of 3 short stories and the first chapter from her newest novel, Crimson Sky. The first 2 short stories in The Color of the Rose are related to Gretchen Craig's first two books: Always and Forever and Ever My Love. It is not necessary to have read the full books to appreciate these two short stories, but be warned: you will want to read them when you are finished. These stories provide additional background about the relationship between her two main characters, Josie and Cleo. The third, Afternoon Heat, is a longer story. It is a masterful slice of depression-era life in the rural South. If you still believe that the written word can be a great source of entertainment, then acquaint yourself with Gretchen Craig. It is pure pleasure to read her work. It is clear that she has done her research and weaves accurate historical time and quality of life detail into her narrative. She continues to capture the essence of another time and place. This is quality writing...and just downright enjoyable reading!

This book has three very short novellas, the first and second stories has a little background about Josie and Chloe, characters from the author's Plantation Series. The third short story is during the depression era which is also a good story. There is a bonus at the end; it is the first chapter of the book 'Crimison Sky' her largest novel. These are short novellas.

Stories start off with a bang, enjoyed all three stories. Very interesting . Now I want to read all of her books. Don't know how I missed this author..keep writing these wonderful stories Ms. Craig I will be purchasing more of your books..

This was a big disappointment for me. I had already read the stories of Josie & Cleo which I loved. Mainly all this was is a recap and preview of her newest novel. If she wants to garner an interest in her writing, this should at least have been FREE.

Not as great as other writings by this Author, but good!

Color of the Rose is by Gretchen Craig. It is a compilation of three chapters written by her before or after writing her novels and which she never used. They are quick peeks into the lives of those involved. It is a quick and easy book to read and it is quite good.
