A book about the New Haven could probably go on for 1000 pages or more. This book doesn't accomplish that, instead it is much more a general recap of the railroad. Sticking mostly to routes, their establishment and termination (or assimiliation into Amtrak) recaps with some very minor looks into the events/history of the New Haven the book left me with the feeling I had just read a large New Haven RR Timetable (w/pictures). A good book, with nice pictures, but scores only in outline form. Good for starters, etc. Still waiting for the definitive history of the New Haven. One that actually mentions Tom Rath and The Man in The Gray Flannel Suit, which connected, in the publics mind, commuters and the New Haven. Or how this highly successful railroad company managed to end up bankrupt and part of Penn Central, et al. It's a story right there: how poor management screwed up this railroad and others. Thank goodness forward thinking states like Connecticut and Massachusetts decided to take over old New Haven commuter routes and run them today.
This book was purchased to help me better model the prototypical NHRR. The book is useful for that purpose, but I hav so far only looked at the pictures and read the descriptions thereof. It is an interesting view of the line and its very important cargo-peolple. Interesting, but has not yet drawn me in to read a lot of the text yet.
Good book
Maybe I was expecting a book up to the standard set by the first book in this series, on Amtrak. I am not familiar with the New Haven's service area, and was often lost when reading the text. The McGinnes era seems to have few pictures. For example, there is only one of the Talgo trains and none of the converted RDC trains. Instead of being a snapshot of the trains of the later years, as shown on the cover, it attempts a history without the photographs or maps to make satisfy a reader new to the history of the NH.
I am not fron thr New England area and therefore this book left me lost at times. A better map would have been a great help. The small half page map of the system was very hard to see even with a magnifying glass at my age. The book did read much like a timetable of passenger service.
For those of us that like the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, will find this informative and true to the point!
I found the book to have a great deal of information on the New Haven Rail road that I did not know. Having grown up on the main line of the New Haven it let me know about the route that I was not aware of.
