While this book did keep me riveted like the first in the series, it had continuity errors, plot holes, and magical conclusions that really detracted from the story. Sometimes it felt as if the book had been disassembled, then put back together in slightly the wrong order. But as much as I didn’t like some of this book, it was still a pretty good read, and I’m going to read the final when it’s released!
While I was a bit confused as to who did what and had to reread the end, I liked the MCs and their relationship, and I did enjoy the story.There are a lot of twists and turns, and, along with the way a few scenes were written, I thought one secondary character was dead but found out at the end that he was alive. I think.The guys continually talk through what possibly happened to get Flare in trouble and try to figure out how to fix it. At times, suppositions are made without any evidence, such as: Darke's guess about the childhood of three secondary characters. And there are a few time jumps where activities occurred that are not shared, such as: when did Flare get his phone back after leaving it at the jail? When did he talk to his father about new evidence?Overall, the dialogue is good, the story is interesting, and there are only a few minor proofreading issues.I am curious to see what book 3 brings.
I had some issues with Flare in this book. He didn't seem to have any clue about basic police procedure, or investigative techniques; for a former Special Agent with the FBI, that just didn't seem believable. I get that he may have been emotionally invested, but I would have liked for Darke and Flare to be more collaborative in their investigations.Having said that, I did enjoy both the romance between the MC's that they are having to rebuild after the events of the first book, as well as the mystery to figure out who really killed Russo. I do have to say that I was surprised by the number of times the ends justified the means for so many of these characters.I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
"The Double" is romantic suspense with hard boiled, noir-ish feel. The characters are complicated, damaged people who have made some really bad choices in the past. Now they have to learn how to live with the consequences. Meanwhile, the plot is a roller coaster, with more twists than the MacArthur Maze. Avrile is a master of suspense. This book is entertaining and insightful. While it is the middle book in a trilogy,I read it as a standalone. Usually the middle book of a trilogy sags, or has too much, or too little, backstory. "The Double" didn't have these problems and stood on its own just fine. I now have to read the others, though, because this one was so fine. Well done, Parker! I received an advance reader's copy,and my reviews are always honest.
I loved this story and the two guys who continued their story Flare Greene and Darke Davis. Odd names but easy to remember. We had Mexico, San Diego, Miami and the Everglades oh and a no name island out beyond the horizon. Crimes, murder, money laundering, drugs, lawyers, bad guys, good guys, homeland security, border patrol and cartel. Everything was tied up in the end which I really appreciated. I think I saw one error where it and is were reversed but nothing else. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and can't wait for the continuation of Flare and Darke's adventures.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Flare and Darke have a steep hill to climb to repair their relationship. Being LE brothers helps ground the men to analyze life when the emotions want to take over. The reveals, twists, turns, intrigues, deals all keep a reader riveted, stuck to kindle devices to find the solution. I was deep in the intrigue with them but safe in my comfy chair. FBI & good PD detectives are smarter from the jump than author portrayed these guys though. This is a fantastic book and forcing me to read the series. These guys learn to appreciate their bond. The mystery, the questions, the partial reveals, awesome! Well done! I received an ARC from Booksprout for a review.
I was going to attempt to read this book without reading the first Darke and Flare book. After reading the first few pages, I decided to go back and read Book 1. I really glad I did - I enjoyed it and I think it help me to enjoy this book more. After many twists and turns, most of the questions regarding Flare's past were answered but there are stories still a few issues that could crop up in book three. This was a good mystery with well written characters and some twists and turns that kept me reading. I think I will re-read this once I get the first book so that I can pick up nuances I am sure I missed because I am coming into a story that already begun. Darke and Flare are a couple that have to work through intense situations that test but don't break them.
