This methodology goes step by step learning the scales string by string, key by key, chord by chord. Proficiency takes literally hundreds of hours, no fooling.
Mel Bay did some amazing and fun guitar scores of many classic tunes.The new, spiral bound editions of his works stay perfectly flat on the music stand and are a welcome upgrade! So much so, that I am replacing all of my original 7 Mel Bay books with the spiral bound versions!Also, if you go to the Mel Bay website and search for these books, you should see, under the "Downloads" tab, you will be able to download most of the music tracks so that you can hear how they should sound! This is a huge benefit. especially if you are studying on your own (as am I).These are 'old' but classic songs and the scoring and chord changes will teach you techniques that you will use playing any music. This is not a 'cookie cutter' approach to guitar. It is much more challenging and as a result, it is much more rewarding, right from the start! So, if you enjoy being challenged and hate being bored, Mel Bay Guitar Method books 1-7 (spiral bound versions, of course!) is the best way to learn!I began studying guitar when I was 12 in 1966 and I still return to these books (although sadly, my originals are literally falling apart from usage!) periodically and each time I do, I find gems that I'd missed the previous times! If you want to really learn the guitar and have great fun doing it, I highly recommend this series!
I use this book to help guide my lessons with my guitar students. I really love this book and how simple, straightforward, and thorough it is. Yes, the songs are older so you may have to supplement some of the learning with your own sheet music and brain. But, overall, for the price and info, it's worth it.
This is the best printed guitar-learning resource I've seen. Was teaching someone who had no knowledge of guitar (I'm not particularly advanced myself), and we worked through the early lessons in this book, which were well-explained and appropriately paced. If you're looking to learn on your own, I'd recommend this as a great supplement to video teaching resources you might find on YouTube or the like.
The first Mel Bay Grade 1 book I had lacked the spiral binding and the CD, but the material inside was in the style of where I started way back when with learning the trombone - the basics, in other words. I've seen negative reviews about the songs being outdated, but you don't buy a book like this to learn songs, you buy it to learn to read music. There may be more familiar tunes in Hal Leonard books, but Mel Bay has it all covered for learning. I'm on books 3 and 4 now, slowly making my way through, and I've purchased this Grade 1 book for 2 other people so far, that's how much I respect what it has to offer. You have to seek out the spiral binding to make it lay flat while using it, and the CD can be used to demonstrate how the practice pieces should sound. Nobody I know is going to be as good as the recordings right off, but that's true of ANY music book, whether it has standard notation or tablature. Mel Bay's material will give you a solid basis to build on, but a good music teacher can help with the finer points. If I was teaching, I'd recommend this book as a practice source.
Our daughter taught herself for a few months out of this book before we invested in paying a guitar instructor for lessons and it really benefitted her. She was at an advantage right out the gate.
I took beginning lessons several years ago using the original Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method, and got partially into grade 2 before life got in the way and my guitar studies fell by the wayside. Wanting to pick it back up, I found the expanded edition (with CDs), which is even better than the original. The expanded edition has many more songs and exercises, which adds a lot of variety and makes the learning more fun. The CDs also help ensure I'm playing the exercises correctly and at the right tempo, allowing me to make the progress I want without a teacher.
Call me crazy but I'm having a grand time playing through this book! I'm about half way through and the tunes and exercises are all excellent and fun to play! "Follow the Leader" is one of my favorites so far. It Is a slightly syncopated duet with a lot of quarter notes and rests placed either at the beginning or end of a measure, which makes it slightly tricky to play! Nothing has been frustrating so far, although some of the "teacher" accompaniments can be challenging. I can't wait until I move onto Grades 2 and 3 and the challenge level increases!
