As several others have noted, this book does not spend much time (only 30% of the book) on the actual journey and activities of Andree and his crew after their launch. They don't get off the ice in their ballon until page 148, and are dead on page 221 (total pages in the book 239). Another major gripe is the total lack of a map that is readable and of any value. The few maps included are small, of a large scale, poorly reproduced, and totally useless. In the exploration books I read, I refer to the maps constantly, otherwise, why bother mentioning lots of specific geographic names and locations? I want to follow the expedition!! I had to refer to maps in other books to get a partial understanding of where things happened. The quality of the pictures included is also poor (and they are small). The author did short summaries of several other Arctic explorations and disasters, and you would be much better off spending your time reading the excellent Ghosts of Cape Sabine about the Greely Expedition, and Icebound, about De Long's attempt to reach the pole from the Bering Sea. Both of these are epic stories of survival and exploration with great maps. Another book that does an excellent job of summarizing expeditions to the Pole and search of the NW Passage is The Arctic Grail (670 pages!).Take my advice and buy these other books instead; you won't be disappointed. Wilkinson should have titled his book "Information about stuff that happened before Andree launched his ballon to the Pole".

This is a perfectly fine book - well written and dealing with an interesting and unexpected aspect of polar exploration. If it is your first foray into the history of arctic exploration, you are likely to enjoy it more than someone who has already looked into the substantial literature that is already out there. Or if you are simply interested in all things arctic, you will likely find something to appreciate.Still, I would agree with some of the other reviewers that, in the the end, you have a sense that the basic source material was insufficient to fill a book on the Andree expedition. There are substantial sections dealing with the Greely expedition and Nansen, neither of which have much of a direct relation to the Andree story. In the case of Greely, the link appears to be his public statement of skepticism about Andree's balloon idea. Not much else, but we still get a rather lengthy account of the well-known Greely story. I enjoyed the book and learned a few things about balloons and about the arctic, but I cannot praise it as highly as some others have done.

This is an interesting and easy to read true-life story of Andree. What I didn't expect was so much extra information. My expectation was maybe too high, as Andree disappeared and no one knew what actually happened to him. Still, it is a fascinating look at this not well known story.

The Ice Balloon is an excellent addition to the voluminous literature on polar exploration and adventure. It addresses the largely unremembered and rather foolhardy attempt by three Swedes to reach the North Pole via hydrogen balloon. Perhaps due to a lack of source material or simply because all were rather enigmatic, Wilkinson never quite manages to flesh out the personalities of three doomed explorers. But the rest of the book crackles with descriptions of other disastrous polar expeditions (e.g., Greely and Nansen) as well the formulation, executive, and final fate of the balloon attempt. I do wish the author had taken advantage of our modern understanding of the North Pole, such as the predominant weather patterns that were almost wholly unknown in 1896, to more fully evaluate whether the balloon attempt ever stood a chance. Alas the book lacks an index and while it does have a bibliography, the text itself lacks citations. Overall, though, it's a great read for those who enjoy the tales of polar exploration.

I had never heard of S.A. Andree and his expedition, but when I did I couldn't wait to read more about it. Since Andree's book was out of print, I thought I would test the waters with this book first (I later got the out of print unabridged Andree). It's a nice and quick look at the expedition with edited highlights, and some background information. Well written and fun to read, and if it whets your interest I would recommend going on to Andree's book.

The Ice Balloon tells the story of S.A. Andrée and his attempt to cross the North Pole in a balloon in 1897. The subtitle, the Heroic Age of Arctic Exploration, is a bit too ambitious for this volume and the examples chosen by Wilkinson do not, in my opinion, do much to illuminate Andrée's story. For more than 25 years ago, after watching the film The Flight of the Eagle, I have longed to learn more about the ill-fated polar balloon flight of S.A. Andrée. On that topic, Wilkinson does an admirable job. Andrée is mostly overlooked as a quirky footnote in most good histories of polar exploration. Wilkinson demonstrates that Andrée was not a kook, but a man with a singular passion to seriously pioneer air travel with balloons. With the hindsight of history, we may scoff at how anyone could come up with such a ludicrous idea, but Wilkinson demonstrates how it was looked upon as a serious venture at the time. We get an intimate look into his life and one of his two companions, Nils Strindberg. Wilkinson does a great service to bring together sources, both obscure and long out of print, that puts the adventure of the ice balloon into proper historical context. My one quibble with Wilkinson is in the choices he uses for the Heroic Age parts of the book. As an overview of the age, the expedition selections--Greely, Nansen, and a survivor of Hall/Polaris--are neither comprehensive enough to encompass a discussion of an "age" nor do they add much if any insight into Andrée's quest. Those sections, it seems to me are intended for readers almost completely unfamiliar with the history of polar exploration. Although the book is short, I believe it would have been more effective if it had been shorter.
