The switch in main character from the prequel threw me a bit I will admit. Trying to see all the "weird" from a masculine view of the newest member of the paramedic team was really interesting. The blurb sets up the story perfectly.Follow along as Dean learns he is not "superman" when something goes wrong. The concepts of emergency personnel needing emotional support for trauma is just now being recognized. It is about time. The author handled this delicate subject with a clear view and honesty that was refreshing. Yes there is a mystery running through the story. I found the interactions of the characters to be adult and realistic.Did I like the book? Yep, bought the next 2 books. Found myself another really cool author.
The premise is interesting and different from any other sci-fi fantasy that I've read lately. So good idea. Typical plot - young hero plunged into a new world he didn't know existed. All fine. But for me the book falls short in two areas: it reads more like an EMT textbook that a novel. Way too much information on drugs and procedures. Too little on the characters, their personalities, motivations and plot. And second, I hate cliff hangers! I don't need everything resolved by the end of the book, but don't drop a major plot twist on the last two pages, expecting I'll buy the next book in the series to find out what happened. If the story is strong, and I like the characters I'll buy the next one. If not, I won't. A cliff hanger ending just irritates the reader.
It opens with a bang and lilts melodically from the start—a new paramedic, on his first assignment at a station he didn't even know existed until he was assigned to it—to the unexpected ending. It's a great read for EMS, Fire, and Law Enforcement professionals, as well as fans of medical or horror/paranormal fiction. I can't wait for the next one!
I had very high hopes for this book and managed to keep them for the first chapter or so. After that, I noticed that the characters didn't flesh out, and that the story was very choppy. About halfway through, I was still giving this 3 stars in my head, and was planning on getting the next installment. At the last page, the stars had dropped down to 1. This installment doesn't end. There was no attempt by the author to tie up any loose ends. It just stopped. In mid-thought, as it were. It read like the writer started writing one longer book then at the last minute decided to do a series and just arbitrarily cut the book in half. Not a good idea.Great idea for a book or series. Bad execution.
This is a fun look at paramedicine and the paranormal. As one who worked in the field, I can say Jamie does a good job of describing the world of EMS. He also has a fresh take on urban fantasy that any urban fantasy reader would enjoy. This book is all about real relationships set in an unreal world. Medical person or not, this book is well worth the read.
For the most part I liked this book. It has an original and interesting premise and a take on "Unusual" people that I found appealing. The characters are adequately developed, even if Dean seems to some readers to be excessively uncertain. If I had found out suddenly and shockingly that the entire world was different from what I had always believed, I might well be somewhat unsure myself. I also liked the information provided about Emergency Medical Care and the roles of Paramedics and their work in Ambulance Services. I enjoy books that teach me something new while simultaneously entertaining me. And this work succeeded on both levels. Given all of the above, I might have given the book Four Stars, had it not been for the ending.I should not even call it an ending. This novel does not conclude; it merely stops. Yes, one secret is revealed at the end of the book, but I found that a completely inadequate ending. As a result the entire book reads as Part One of a larger novel, rather than as a story complete in itself. Nothing at all is resolved here, and I very much resent feeling that I must buy the rest of the series to find out anything that results.
book ended before story really developed. don't like being lead on to buy the next in the series. I will not be doing that cause I don't see the point.
Not bad, but not terribly compelling, either.Jamie Davis is obviously a medical professional and makes, what I consider to be, the "classic mistake" of authors writing about their own profession: Overly-specific descriptions of related action or concepts and the vocabulary they entail. It is not easy to provide enough technical jargon and detail to show the reader you take their intellect and general knowledge seriously without laying it on so thick you elicit two major classes of response:Either the reader's eye's glaze over due to the level of technical jargon resulting in disinterest or the reader is bored by being told too many details they were already familiar with. I was a paramedic for years and fall into the latter group.Either way, the main problem is the exposition does not advance the plot and violates the "Show don't tell" rule of thumb.People like Robin Cooke and Michael Crichton (a physician himself) were able to toe this line pretty well in their medical/techo-thrillers.The same is true of Preston and Childs, whose stories usually feature a lot of technology and specialized professions (engineers, anthropologists, etc.)I wish this author every success, but recommend some review of the techniques for handling this sort of material.
